LST 325, Evansville Museum of Arts, History & Science, and Wartime Museum Celebrate the 75th Anniversary of D-Day
EVANSVILLE, IN. – June 6, 2019 marks the 75th anniversary of D Day, and the LST 325, Evansville Museum of Arts, History & Science, and Wartime Museum have come together to celebrate the anniversary.
From June 6-9, 2019, the LST 325 will be moved and docked at Tropicana. FREE tours of the ship will be offered June 6, 2019 from 1-5 PM and June 7-9, 2019 from 9 AM-5 PM generously sponsored by Tropicana, Vectren, Old National Bank and Ziemer Funeral Home.
The 4-day celebration will begin with a private ceremony the morning of June 6th on the LST 325. The ceremony will feature dignitaries from various allied countries, a representative from the Governor’s office and Evansville Mayor Lloyd Winnecke. Media and the public are welcome to watch from a distance.
The LST 325 will open for tours at 1 PM and the Air Force band will play 2-4 PM that afternoon.
The Evansville Museum of Arts, History & Science will host a special screening of the classic movie, Casablanca. Retired EVSC film studies teacher, Terry Hughes will provide commentary on the film’s place in cinema history. Attendees 21 years and older may enjoy a complementary French 75 cocktail. Tickets for the show are $10 per person.
Friday, June 7th at 12 PM at the Evansville Museum of Arts, History & Science, James MacLeod, Professor of History at the University of Evansville and Tom Lonnberg, Curator of History for the Evansville Museum of Arts, History & Science will present a program featuring a talk focusing on Evansville-made war material used during the invasion and also explore other avenues. People are invited to bring their lunch to the presentation.
Throughout the 4 days, the Wartime Museum will have an exhibit, “75 on the 75th”, showcasing 75 D-Day artifacts.
Dance the night away 40’s style on Saturday, June 8th at the Big Band 40’s Gala at Tropicana Riverfront Events Center. Social hour begins at 6 PM with a buffet dinner at 7 PM. The night will feature the 18-Member Evansville Symphonic Band from 7:30-9:30 PM.
